Description
Narrated by Rabbi Arthur F. Starr, a former rabbi for our Synagogue, Sands of Time showcases the deep history of the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas.
Everything in the historic St. Thomas Synagogue is original, dating to 1833 when the current structure was built. The benches, the Ark and the Lima are made of mahogany that used to flourish on the islands. The Menorah begins the Lima is Spanish and dates to the 11th century. The chandeliers are from Europe, probably Holland.
The sand floor is reminiscent of the Sephardic Jews who formed the original congregation in 1796. during the Spanish Inquisition, Catholic Spain persecuted all other religions and jews were forced, by threat of death, to convert. Many still help Jewish activities in their collards, using sand to muffle the sound.
Active and Chai members live on and off island. The spirit of the Jewish community flourishes through the support and dedication of a close-knit, family environment.
