Welcome!
Tours of the synagogue are given by a member of our staff during weekday operating hours.
These tours are free, but donations made to the synagogue are a major source of our support and are the means by which we are able to remain open and accessible.
To inquire about tours, please call us at 340-774-4312 or email us on info@synagogue.vi
We look forward to welcoming you!
Come for services; meet the community
For those staying on island, we also would love a chance to host you at services, where you will have a chance to meet and get to know our synagogue family.
Erev Shabbat (Friday evening) services are usually held at 6:00 PM on the first Friday night of the month, and 6:30 PM all other weeks, but the schedule varies, so check our calendar or call or contact us about a specific date.
Our congregation was founded by Jews of Spanish and Portugese descent. We followed the Sephardic-Orthodox rite for the first century and a half of our existence.
In 1947, with an influx of new families from North America, the congregation joined what was then called the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism). We now identify as a Reform synagogue and are part of the North American and international Reform movements. The Reform siddur, Mishkan Tāfilah, is the primary prayerbook used during worship services.
That being said, the Synagogue serves the religious needs of a diverse Jewish population and welcomes all denominations and backgrounds. And we also often host ādestinationā services which reflect practices of many different branches of Judaism.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions, or to make arrangements for a visit or to come to services.
Please see our membership page about becoming a āChai Memberā.
Some of the members of the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas meet for one of the first in-person services following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.Ā
